Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich reminds those with unsecured property taxes due for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018-19 relating to business property, leased equipment, boats and aircraft to submit payment by Friday, Aug. 31, 2018 to avoid late charges. Any unsecured property tax payments received after Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, that 1) do not show a U.S. Postal Service date stamp for the 31st or earlier, 2) are not received by someone in our office or by 5 p.m. on the 31st or 3) are not processed by midnight online on the 31st at ocgov.com/octaxbill, will be charged a 10 percent penalty plus a $75 collection fee.
Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich encourages taxpayers to not stand in line, but pay online by eCheck with no additional cost using a bank checking or savings account at ocgov.com/octaxbill, a secure website. “The most cost-effective way for my office to process tax payments is by eCheck,” says Freidenrich. To further assist taxpayers, tax payments processed no later than 11:59 p.m. PST, Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, using the Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s website at ocgov.com/octaxbill will be accepted as timely payment of taxes, receive same-day credit, and a receipt from the online payment that can either be printed or emailed.
The owner of record as of Jan. 1, 2018, is responsible for paying the unsecured property tax even if the unsecured property has been sold or otherwise disposed of after Jan. 1, 2018, as these taxes are not prorated by time of ownership; only secured property taxes are prorated by time of ownership. The new owner of the unsecured property is not responsible for paying the property taxes on the personal property purchased until Jan. 1, 2019.
As a reminder, unsecured property tax bills are no longer issued for businesses and boats or aircraft that have an assessed value of less than $3,000 in property taxes. Taxpayers can view FY 2018-19 unsecured tax statements online at ocgov.com/octaxbill to see if any current or delinquent unsecured property taxes are owed. If you don’t have the TC Reference number, and you are a business, you can use the unsecured property tax search feature by business name.
Payments by eCheck, which allows a taxpayer to pay using their bank account online without a service fee, were $1.9 billion or 27 percent of all property tax payments received in FY 2017-18. The number of mailed payments decreased by 10 percent in the last five years and currently represents less than 39 percent of all property tax payments received.
The Treasurer billed over $217 million in unsecured property taxes for FY 2018-19. Unsecured property tax bills were sent to approximately 93,000 businesses, 23,086 boat owners and 781 aircraft owners.
