For the 9th consecutive year, residents and volunteers gathered at Concorde College in Garden Grove for the Central County Health Expo. The 5-hour event hosted by Senator Janet Nguyen, the Central County Foundation, Illumination Foundation, Serve the People and Lestonnac Free Clinic served hundreds of residents who accessed free comprehensive vision, dental and medical services. In addition to receiving on-site care, residents also learned about health care related legislation being considered by the California State Legislature.
“Our number one goal in hosting this event is to provide residents with quality, compassionate, comprehensive health care,” said Senator Janet Nguyen. “Beyond this, we pride ourselves in being attentive to the needs of the community and that is why we expanded vision services this year.”
The 9th Annual Central County Health Expo featured vision services (vision exams, screenings for ocular pathological conditions, prescription eyeglasses and non-prescription reading glasses), dental services (fillings, extractions, and cleanings) and medical services (vitals assessments, physician evaluations, prescriptions, lab work, body mass index, glucose, mammograms and acupuncture). Residents were also connected with a medical home where they can meet their ongoing medical needs.
All of these services were offered at no cost to the public and were made possible through the generous donations of various organizations, agencies and businesses. Over 300 volunteers, including medical doctors, dentists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, dental and medical assistants, nurses, students and community members volunteered their time.
“This Health Expo is a success because it is the product of the kindness that lives in the hearts of our wonderful volunteers. Our volunteers have personal commitments that they set aside to come and serve others. They are noble individuals and they deserve the credit for the success of this event,” said Senator Janet Nguyen.
Following in the tradition of providing preventative health care services to the community, Senator Nguyen will be partnering with the American Heart Association to host a “Love Your Heart Day” event at her District Office on Thursday, May 10th where residents can learn how to take their own blood pressure and what their blood pressure numbers mean. This information is especially important following the release of updated blood pressure guidelines in late 2017.
To help residents continue to meet their health care needs, Senator Nguyen will also offer free flu vaccination clinics in the Fall of 2018 and host the Central-West County Health Expo on October 27, 2018. This expo will also feature free dental, medical and vision care.
