Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich today reminds Orange County taxpayers that the second installment of property taxes is due no later than Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Payments not received by the deadline, unless postmarked by April 10, will incur a 10 percent late penalty plus a $23 fee.
Current second installment secured property tax receipts are significantly ahead of the same time last year primarily due to the large number of second installment payments made prior to December 31, 2017, because of the new Federal Tax $10,000 cap on State and Local Taxes for 2018. As of February 28, 40 percent of second installment property tax bills have been paid versus 33 percent at the same time last year, with $538 million more in secured property taxes being received. Total secured property tax receipts are 14 percent, or $4.3 million ahead of the same time last year.
“Last year, we received over 57 percent of property tax payments electronically.
Taxpayer payments online by eCheck are the fastest growing payment method and property tax payments by eCheck have increased by 13 percent in the last year,” stated Treasurer Freidenrich. “This secure online payment option using your bank account is free to the taxpayer, and your payment is applied to your account the same day you make the payment online.” Taxpayers can make payments using this method up to midnight on April 10 by going to ocgov.com/octaxbill or scanning the QR code below. Taxpayers can also include their email address to have their payment receipt e-mailed directly to them.
Taxpayers who need a copy of a prior year’s tax bill in order to complete their State or Federal income tax returns by April 15, can view and print their 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 property tax bills online 24/7, and view the last two years of payment details using the Treasurer’s website at ocgov.com/octaxbill. In addition, taxpayers can also go to ocgov.com/taxreminder and sign up to receive a payment reminder by text (NEW) or by email approximately 10 days and one day before each installment’s last timely payment date. An email will also go out when the 2018-19 secured tax bills are available online next September. The date paid and amount of current year property taxes payments is also available online for anyone needing this information for 2017 Federal and State tax purposes, especially helpful for those taxpayers who paid by December 31, 2017.
If a taxpayer pays using a bank’s or other online payment site, please make sure the payee is listed as the “County of Orange” and include the APN number as the account number, exactly as it shows on the property tax bill. Payments not received by the Treasurer from the bank with a valid postmark on or before April 10, 2018, will incur a late fee penalty of 10 percent of the amount due plus a $23 fee. As it may take several days, and possibly up to a week to receive these payments, we encourage taxpayers to pay using the Treasurer’s secure online site to avoid a potential penalty.
If you have already paid your property taxes, make sure that you check out the online property tax statement at ocgov.com/octaxbill and input your address to see if you have any prior year property taxes due or if you have a refund due to you. Check out your parcel using our GIS map by clicking on the map icon when you view your property tax information online or go directly to ocgov.com/octaxmap (view in Chrome or Firefox) to view any property in the County of Orange.
